What is Duplicate File Finder Pro? [Top]
Duplicate File Finder Pro is a powerful Windows program for finding
duplicate files on your computer. Look on the main page for the entire
list of features found in Duplicate File Finder Pro.
Does this
program contain ANY malware? [Top]
Duplicate File Finder Pro is, and always will be 100% free of all kinds of
harmful code such as spyware, adware and viruses. If you don't like
the program you can always uninstall it without risking any kind of
harm to your system.
System requirements [Top]
Windows 95/98/2000/2003 Server/ME/XP/Vista
128 MB of RAM (256 recommended)
Internet connection
How do I start it? [Top]
After you have installed it, open your start-menu and click on
'Programs', under that tab you will see a group called 'Duplicate
File Finder Pro'.
How do I use
it? [Top]
The program automatically starts with the Quick Start Wizard open to
give you a quick and easy start. If you require a more specific scan
then you can close that wizard and simply click on the button "Add
path" to add an appropiate path to scan for duplicate files with
individual scanning options. Then just click on "Start" and the
program will begin working, once it's done you can use the "Compare"
function to compare the potential duplicate files found for true
duplicates. When that is done click on the "Selector" button to
select the files of your choice in the results. Afterwards you click
either on "Delete" to move the files to recycle bin or to permanently
delete them, or on the "Move" button to move the selected files to a
directory of your choice. Then you're all done, and you can export a
list of files if you want to.
Are the files permanently deleted?
[Top]
Yes and no. You have the option of both moving the files to the
recycle bin or to permanently delete them if you wish to. Any file
moved to the recycle bin can be restored back to it's exact location
if you change your mind. A file permanently deleted can not be
restored by this program.
Why should I purchase the full version? [Top]
The free Shareware version has some limitations compared to the
registered full version. All these limits will be removed when you
purchase the full version. For a list of the limitations please see
the buy now page.
Settings
[Top]
Duplicate File Finder Pro features some useful settings under the
"Settings" button which are good to be aware of.
Standard
After the search is done - If any of these buttons are marked then
those algorithms will automatically be used to compare the files
found after the search is done.
Autoselected the duplicates - Automatically marks the duplicate
files in the list after the scan has been completed or after the
comparing has been completed.
Use CPU gentle comparing - Makes small pauses when comparing files
to take some load off the CPU.
Folders to skip
All directories added here along with their subdirectories will
not be scanned by the program and all the files within them will not
be included in the search.
Extensions to skip
All files that have one of these file extensions will be skipped
by the program.
Add path
[Top]
These are the paths that will be scanned for duplicate files. Each
path or folder that you add will inherit the settings under the
"Individual settings" frame that are found in this window. This
means that you can for example tell the program to both scan for
*.mp3 files in C:\, and *.avi files larger than 52 MB in D:\ in the
same
session.
Compare
[Top]
There are three different algorithms which can be used to compare
the potentially duplicate files that have been found. The first one
is called "Fuzzy comparison", it's very fast and quickly discards
files which are very different in content. It's best used in
combination with one of the two other algorithms. The second
algorithm is called "CRC comparison" and is fast and very very
accurate (around 99.9999% accurate) which is more than sufficient
for the average computeruser if you just want to find duplicate
movies, mp3's, downloads or such. The third and last algorithm is
called "Bytewise comparison", it's about 30% slower than "CRC
comparison" but it is on the other hand 100% accurate. Meaning that
files found by the "Bytewise comparison" are beyond any doubt 100%
duplicates. This is recommend if you have very high demands for
accuracy, otherwise use the "CRC comparison". Both CRC and Bytewise
are best used in combination with the "Fuzzy comparison" to increase
the speed while still remaining just as accurate.
Selector
[Top]
This is a nifty little tool which can help you select specific files
of the ones found. You can select files based on size, filename
match, filename containing a string, or a matching path. The
selected files can then be deleted or moved.
Delete [Top]
Here you can permanently delete or move the files to the recycle
bin. A file which is moved to the recycle bin can later be restored
back to it's exact location. Remember that only the selected files
in the list will be processed.
Move [Top]
This function allows you to move all of selected files to a
directory of your choice. If you select the option "Rename files
with conflicting filenames" then files with the same name moved to
this directory will be renamed in this manner from "original.file"
to "original(0).file" and "original(1).file" and so on.
Export [Top]
You can export a report of the files in the list to a Text or HTML
file. If you chose a Text file then the "Separate the fields with"
setting will be used. It sets what character that will be used to
separate each of the fields in the list. This setting is not used when
you
export a HTML report.
It won't start, it says I'm missing some file? [Top]
If the program says that you're missing an OCX or DLL file then
download and install this file from the Microsoft website (restart
your computer after you have installed it):
Runtime library
If it still won't work then contact us
and tell us what file that you are missing.
The Automatic updater always
times out or can't connect? [Top]
Make sure that you have set your firewall to allow the Automatic
updater to access "www.duplicate-file-finder.com" on port 80, so that the
updater may connect to that site in order to check for updates. It's
not necessary to enable the Automatic updater for the program to
work, but it really helps to keep Duplicate File Finder Pro up to date if you
want to be using the latest version.
